The Importance of Year-Round Lawn Fertilization & Treatment

Most of us tend to put a lot of effort into our lawn during the spring, summer, and fall. This is because in the spring everything is blooming and turning green, in the summer it is growing too quickly so we have to cut it back, and in the fall leaves are falling constantly. Although these seasons are important and you should keep up with it to ensure your lawn looks great; you shouldn’t forget the other season. Winter is also important for your lawn and it is even more important that you not skip out on any of it. Do you know the importance of year-round lawn fertilization and treatment?

Spring Lawn Care

In the spring, fertilize your lawn. You may also want to get in the first cutting and trimming before you fertilize to get your lawn ready for growing and changing. It may be helpful if you choose a fertilizer with weed killer in it. If you have a dense lawn, a lot of dead grass laying on the soil, or tightly packed soil; now would also be a great time to aerate the soil as well. You can do this with a dethatcher if you want to save time because it allows you to skip manually raking. Some people find it helpful to aerate after a light rain or watering.

Summer Care

Mowing is great for your lawn and the way that it looks. However, you need to make sure that you are not cutting too much. Avoid cutting it more than 1/3 the height of the grass stalk, because it can increase your chances of having weeds rather than grass. You also need to pay attention to watering your lawn. As the temperatures increase, your watering times may have to as well, but you should not put more than an inch of water each week; unless it is hot and dry outside. Fertilizer with bug repellents can also be beneficial during the summer.

Winter Prep

Fall is the time when you should prepare for winter. Aerate if you haven’t yet done it, reseed if you need to, and try to eliminate piles of dead grass that may have been overlooked so far. Raking and removing dead grass will both ensure that your soil gets the sun that it needs before winter sets in. During the winter, you should prepare for the spring ahead and make sure that your lawn care equipment is winterized if necessary. You should also avoid using deicing chemicals that may cause damage to your lawn.
